EDUCATIONAL AND ADVENTURE PATH
The mine trail is designed so that people can choose between a 5-km and 7.5-km route, depending on their physical condition and interest. Both routes pass through the display mine, and the longer one also takes you through the town of Fell and the vineyards. As part of the route is quite rocky and involves a climb (to the Hofgrube), it is not totally suitable for prams.
Most of the route runs through the forest and past 10 slate mines, where slate-clad information boards detail the mine’s history and operating time, and use a floorplan (mine map) to explain its size and complexity.
You can use a torch to see into the grilled tunnels (bat grills) which today still contain some railway tracks, and flash photography to take a snap of the tunnels’ interior. So don’t forget to bring your camera.
START OF HIKE
Park at the display mine’s car park, cross the stream, and then simply take the wide forest path right and follow the brown “Grubenwanderweg Fell” sign.
MINE HUNT FOR CHILDREN
Young hikers will enjoy our mine hunt, which will ask them questions at various locations along the mine trail, or get them to complete small tasks. So don’t forget your torch…
Solutions are recorded on the question sheet (PDF) which can then be submitted at the display mine. If all the answers and therefore the mystery word are correct, the discoverer can expect a little surprise!
